Stern Academy for Jewish Education (SAJE)

Jewish education is an awesome responsibility!  The challenge is to teach a five thousand year old tradition that is both ancient and modern.

Through a carefully selected curriculum for the classroom and opportunities for enrichment and worship, we hope to accomplish this goal: to give our children a solid foundation in Judaism, a foundation that they can build upon throughout their lifetimes.

TBT's Religious School has something to offer ALL learners:
  • Bagels and Blox:  Ages 3 months to 3 years:  Children and parents join together monthly for a musical, interactive program that brings Judaism to our youngest learners.
  • Outstanding Nursery School for ages 3-4 and Kindergarten class for 5 year-olds prepare our youngest learners for life-long Jewish education in a joyful, musical setting.
  • Exciting, interactive educational programs for students in grades 1-6, combining Hebrew and Judaic topics in a nurturing setting, catering to the needs of EVERY child.
  • Vibrant Academy program for students in grades 7-10, designed especifically to keep our young people involved in Judaism.
  • Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation classes are included in our school program.

Our goal is not only to educate, but to work together with families to ensure a lasting love of Judaism.

Rachel Kershenbaum Smith, Director of Religious School

Rachel Kershenbaum Smith is TBT as Director of SAJE. Rachel has a passion for all aspects of Jewish education, and a lifelong commitment and career path that inspires confidence that we will move forward with solid leadership.

Over twenty years ago Rachel began working at Camp Kinderland, a progressive Jewish summer camp, rising to the position of Assistant Director of the Camp. She also spent the last ten years teaching at the Kinderland Shule. Rachel returned to TBT as a Hebrew teacher this year, having taught here back in the late 1990’s. As a current teacher in our religious school Rachel is prepared to make a smooth transition into the job while building on the many successes of the past.

TBT is very excited by Rachel’s outstanding skill set and intellect, enthusiasm for the mission of our religious school, her commitment to continually raise the level of the education of the school, and her passionate desire to help educate the next generation of Reform Jews.

Rachel is an honors graduate of Rutgers University. She expects to receive her Masters from Brooklyn College this summer and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Rachel taught at Brooklyn College and volunteered locally at the Nyack Center.

Rachel can be reached at 845-358-2248 x107 or via email at rachel@templebethtorah.org .
