Welcome

TBT is a welcoming, inclusive Reform Jewish Congregation in Upper Nyack, NY which offers dynamic educational, spiritual and social programs for all ages.

In March of 1965, thirteen families gathered in one of their homes to form what would become Temple Beth Torah. Within a year, a wooded tract on Route 9W was acquired and the original building opened in 1966. Known as the ‘Shul with a Pool,’ this small group of dedicated families gathered strength and grew, developing the infrastructure needed for a long and vibrant future.

Continued growth throughout the 1980s and ’90s left TBT with a challenge – we had outgrown our facility for the second time since our inception. Just seven years ago we completed a major expansion and renovation resulting in the magnificent sacred space and programming facility we enjoy today.

As Temple Beth Torah begins its fifth decade, there are several families who have third generation members. The years have brought an evolution in style, but the ideals remain the same.

We are a welcoming and passionate community that inspires one another to seek new spiritual heights (avodah). Together, we pursue life-long Jewish learning and enrich our lives through active Jewish living (Torah). We consider it our sacred obligation to make the world around us a better place (gemilut hasadim).

At TBT, we pride ourselves on being a diverse community with doors wide open. We are a congregation proud of our past, enjoying what we have created together for our present, and enthusiastic about the bright future that lies before us.

Rachel Kershenbaum Smith, Director of Religious School

TBT is proud that Rachel Kershenbaum Smith has joined TBT as Director of SAJE. Rachel brings a passion for all aspects of Jewish education, and a lifelong commitment and career path that inspires confidence that we will move forward with solid leadership.

Over twenty years ago Rachel began working at Camp Kinderland, a progressive Jewish summer camp, rising to the position of Assistant Director of the Camp. She also spent the last ten years teaching at the Kinderland Shule. Rachel returned to TBT as a Hebrew teacher this year, having taught here back in the late 1990’s. As a current teacher in our religious school Rachel is prepared to make a smooth transition into the job while building on the many successes of the past.

TBT is very excited by Rachel’s outstanding skill set and intellect, enthusiasm for the mission of our religious school, her commitment to continually raise the level of the education of the school, and her passionate desire to help educate the next generation of Reform Jews.

Rachel is an honors graduate of Rutgers University. She expects to receive her Masters from Brooklyn College this summer and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Rachel taught at Brooklyn College and volunteered locally at the Nyack Center.

We are pleased to welcome Rachel’s husband Dan, and sons Jonah and Elliot to the TBT community.

We are all excited to welcome Rachel to her new role in our school and we look forward to benefitting from her passion and skills.

Rachel can be reached at 845-358-2248 x107 or via email at rachel@templebethtorah.org .

It’s a Knitzvah

Jan 20, 2012 12:00 AM
Our Hebrew high school offers core classes and elective classes in small units.  When we were approaching the new unit, the educator asked me if I would be willing to teach a knitting class.  I agreed to do it on two conditions: that we were able to somehow create a class that also involved serious [...]

The Eighth Candle

Dec 27, 2011 12:00 AM
Today’s synonym for light is (last, but absolutely not least) inspiration / spirituality. There was a machloket (a disagreement) between the houses of Hillel and Shammai as to what order the candles on the Chanukiah should be lit on Chanukah.  The house of Shammai stated that the holiday should begin with all eight candles lit, [...]

The Sixth and Seventh Candles

Dec 27, 2011 12:00 AM
I got caught up with family celebrating Chanukah this weekend, and so am posting candles six and seven together this evening.  Watching my nephew squeal over the “wheel” toys we bought him was well worth it!! Synonym number six for light was “beacon.”  A beacon is a light signaling safety or home that can be [...]
